I should have bought a more intermediate level of Captivate learning. Many pages at the beginning of this book are related to understanding what Captivate is, how it works, as well as explaining what ISD is, etc.
I really don’t need all that information. All the same, if you are beginning Captivate and know little or nothing about instructional systems design, then this is probably a good buy. It’s well written and I like the page design, but the content is for beginners. I noticed quite a few typographic errors–too many for a technical reference.
The book focuses too much on describing the interface and explaining the obvious and not enough on how to perform the range of tasks that a user might want to accomplish within the most common contexts. For instance, the authors advocate using click boxes for quizzes, but they don’t go into any detail about the settings you might want to use with the click boxes and why. Also, very little is said about creating and using multiple backgrounds for a slide program for repeated screens such as section openers, summary screens, quiz question graphic templates.
This is probably beyond the scope of the book, but it would have been helpful to have a series of scenarios like a software simulation, a step-by-step slide show that doesn’t use the playbar, creating a quiz, and so forth.
Also, it might have been good to take some typical pages and decompose them by discussing settings for the page and the objects on the page. Overall, the book is adequate but could be much better. I have actually recommended it to a colleague as an overview of Captivate 5, but I don’t feel it’s really in a league with other books at this price range. I have been learning Captivate 5 for the past several weeks, primarily with the assistance of Lynda.
I decided to purchase this book to supplement my other resources, and have consulted it a few times over the past week. Such a glaring error in the book HAS to be saying something about it’s overall value. The page numbers in the table of contents are, however, accurate, from what I can see. He does a great job of highlighting the critical elements of the release. How many slides or sections in one project depends on a lot of factors, but essentially you can expect to do — average slides without issue.
Keep in mind that in the end performance is also heavily dependent on the computer that plays back the content. Cp can publish output files in several ways. You can publish a single Flash file SWF — which is the normal route. You can publish it as a video, as an exe PC application or as an app Macintosh application.
