The fake Collector kidnaps Amelia’s sister Rachel and puts her in a trap to drown before committing suicide by cop.

Lincoln uses his insights to determine the location of the trap, and Rachel is saved. The real Bone Collector, aware of the copycat’s existence, prepares a “gift” to send to Lincoln.

Amelia and Lincoln both receive human bones in the mail, and realize that the Bone Collector has returned.

Suspecting a cover-up, Lincoln uses a small bit of evidence to lead them to a makeshift grave occupied by Max Sobirov, a local stonemason. Searching his apartment, Amelia finds proof that Sobirov kidnapped several teenage girls, including Lucy. The truth emerges: the local residents uncovered Sobirov’s crimes and killed him themselves , but were unaware of Lucy’s existence.

With time running out, Lincoln puts together a list of cemeteries where Sobirov worked and has them all searched. Lucy is found locked in a hidden crypt and Sellitto reunites her with her parents. The on-going United Nations conference that New York is currently hosting. Deaver writes well in my view and in addition to his description of the physical limitations a quadriplegic such as Rhyme experiences he also shows a good insight into the emotional and mental health aspects of such a condition. Deaver does not spare his readers the realities of such an existence.

Well worth a look. A good procedural crime thriller with the emphasis on procedural – too many references to somewhat arcane SCO work without enough explanation dilute the tension being built up in the serial killer parts – but it is the first in a series so things may improve The film is a help, though Rhymes is far more likeable through being played by Denzel A good start – I hope! Even though I’d seen the film which seems to have followed the book very closely, I enjoyed this more than I expected, and, though I thought I’d remembered the ending, I hadn’t!

In parts there is a little too much forensic detail and technical information but I coped by glancing over it to get back to the story. It’s a different take on the usual detective novel and I enjoyed getting to know the characters, who were well drawn. The fact that Rhyme is crippled and can only move his head and one finger, and needs everything doing for him, down to the most basic bodily functions, is dealt with in a matter-of-fact, non-pitying way, and does not become ‘ the story’, a quadriplegic is what he is, not who he is and it is simply part of the tapestry of the story.

His descriptive powers are amazing and the tension is palpable throughout. Deaver crafts intriguing characters trying to stay one step ahead at all times. It continually draws you in.

I enjoyed the movie years ago and just happened upon these books – Very glad I did. One person found this helpful. Great read. Good intro to the series. Starts off with some quite technical terms to get you into the lingo and, to be honest, it just went staight over my head , but once the story beds in it becomes a good read.

The characters are competant, clever and well thought out. The plot is easy to follow but also interesting. The subplots weave well into the main plot. The pacing is strong. I give it 4 stars because i’ve already read book 2 in the series and that is even better! I watched the film some years ago and it didn’t overly excite me in the slightest I found this read one of the best novels I have read in along time I can picture the character Lincoln rhyme as Denzel Washington and Amelia sachs as Angelina AND thank you amazon for emailing me to let me know that there is a Lincoln Rhyme series!!!!!

Strangely this is the last of the Lincloln Rhyme books that I decided to read, strange in that it is infact the first book of the Lincoln Rhyme series. The reason I had not read it is that it didnt seem as grabbing as the other titles and whilst its good it certainly doesnt rank amongst the Rhyme-Deaver best.

Colin Stanton had lost his family, and had blamed criminal investigator Lincoln Rhyme for letting it happen as he was investigating the case. Under the name Peter Taylor, he planned on killing Lincoln on their first meeting, but when finding out that he in fact wanted to die, he needed a reason to keep him alive.

Using inspiration from a 19th Century serial killer called James Schneider AKA The Bone Collector who had lost his family as well when they where gunned down by police officers, he used the identity as an alias and began copying the killings in the book, believing his own victims to be those of Schneider. Also, Schneider is German for “Tailor”, where he got the idea for his alias. Peter kidnapped a business couple, and killed the man and had the woman killed with Steam.

His third victim was a German immigrant who he believed to be Hanna, one of Schneider’s victims. He tied her up and cut her down to the bone and left her for the rats, but she was saved on time.

His fourth victim was an old man, who he chained up by the pier to be drowned, but he was saved. He then kidnapped a mother and daughter.

Although he made a “deal” with her to free them as long as he can cut the flesh from her right foot, he decided against it after her 3-year-old daughter was crying. With time counting down between each abduction and possible death, Rhyme recruits rather-unwilling Amelia Donaghy, haunted by her cop father’s suicide and thinking she’s next, into working the crime scenes to track down the killer. After an accident in a tunnel, a forensics expert is left as a quadriplegic who is able only to move his head and one finger. Setting his finger to a computer, he is able to manipulate his environment with the help of a loving nurse. Even so, fearing seizures that could leave him a vegetable, he plans his “transition” with the help of a hesitational doctor friend.
